The Naval Terms Dictionary defines a shipmate as “a person with whom one is serving or has served, particularly at sea.” For those who have served in the Sea Services, the term is also used when referring to friends, or to those with whom a close professional bond has been formed.

We here at the United States Navy Memorial proudly use the term shipmate to refer to those with whom we have served at sea, but also those who have been active in assisting us with our mission “To honor the men and women of the Sea Services – Past, Present and Future.”

There are many ways you can join us and become a Navy Memorial shipmate.  You can donate your time at the Memorial in Washington, D.C. or help us build regional Memorial sites around the country.  You can make a financial contribution.  You can register yourself, your colleagues, your friends and your family members in The Navy Log, the Permanent National Registry of Sea Services.

The Memorial receives no government or Navy grants for its programs, and depends entirely upon public-spirited organizations and individuals for the financial resources that make possible all of the many programs and activities you see at the Memorial and described on these pages.

To get started, please contact us by e-mail at ahoy@navymemorial.org or complete our On-Line Form.

We look forward to welcoming you aboard!
