The administrative contingent of the Navy Medical Service Corps grew out of the officer component of the Hospital Corps.  Prior to 1947, former enlisted hospital corpsmen were commissioned to perform medical administration assignments.  Shown here is Hospital Corps Lieutenant (junior grade) George Strott, who served as a chief pharmacist’s mate with the Marines in France.  There he earned the Navy Cross for valor.
