    Spring 2006 Strategic Systems Programs:
America's Seaborne Deterrent
The Mission

From its inception, the mission of Strategic Systems Programs has been to meet an evolving challenge to develop and deploy formidable new sea-based weapons systems. SSP has directed the quest for these new defense capabilities by overseeing research and development, testing, creating and manufacturing new hardware, constructing facilities, and training.

Toward this end, SSP has assembled a nationwide team of 20,000 contractor, university, government, and Navy personnel who have

bonded together into a cohesive unit. Unique among military programs, SSP's team concept continues to provide new solutions to America's changing defense needs. From the Polaris, Poseidon, and Trident missile systems to the conversion of four ballistic missile submarines (SSBN) to their new role as guided missile submarines (SSGN), the contractual family of military, civilian, and industry personnel has ensured a tradition of achievement and success.
