The establishment of the Nurse Corps continued the advancements in Navy Medicine that had begun a decade earlier with the establishment of the Hospital Corps a decade earlier.  This group photograph of the first twenty Navy nurses appointed in 1908—known as the “Sacred Twenty”—was taken at the Naval Hospital, Washington, DC, now the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery.
