The Dental Surgeon’s office aboard USS Manchuria in the early 1900’s.  Until the establishment of the Dental Corps, the Navy relied on civilian dentists or the occasional hospital corpsman who had received dental training to treat emergencies.  As Navy dentists became part of the organizational structure, routine and preventive care reduced the incidence of dental emergencies and lost time among the crew.
